Army Values Essay

Nowadays the military of the country is the face of its independence, patriotism, national security and power. Army, especially its triviality, courageous soldiers and wise commanders, is widely glorified in our culture, history and mass media. The twentieth century, with its wars and numerous conflicts changed a lot in perception of the Army and now our people take the army as an important and essential part of our life.

The main army values can be described by the acronym “LDRSHIP” that stands for seven core values such as loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage (The United States Army, 2016).

“Fulfill your obligations” (The United States Army, 2016). Duty is the first and the most important value that involves a sense of moral commitment and obligatory to serve and defend the homeland. The essence of this value lets soldiers act in different situations correctly even without appropriate orders, based only on the inner feelings of what is right.

“Treat people as they should be treated” (The United States Army, 2016). Dignity and respect allows to appreciate the best in others, and each soldier should treat his colleagues as he wants to be treated. Army highlights the importance of equal treatment and opportunity for everyone.
“Bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution, the Army, your unit, and other soldiers” (The United States Army, 2016).  Unfailing loyalty to the chain of command, its goals, and Soldiers is one of the most important part of the effective army. A loyal soldier is the one who appreciates true leadership and is ready to cover his fellow soldiers, his loyalty is never questioned.

“Put the welfare of the nation, the Army, and your subordinates before your own” (The United States Army, 2016). Selfless service lets our army to put the security of the motherland before soldier’s personal needs, to sacrifice in favor of the greater welfare. The group of soldiers who are ready to serve the country, regardless the obstacles and personal beliefs is the most powerful army in the world.

“Live up to all the Army values” (The United States Army, 2016). Honor is something that each soldier expects to receive for his selfless service, as The Medal of Honor is the highest possible military honor.

“Do what’s right – legally and morally” (The United States Army, 2016). Integrity is the quality of the professional officer of being complete or undivided; a person of integrity is truthful in all things, that he can be trusted.

“Face fear, danger, or adversity both physical and moral” (The United States Army, 2016). The last but not least, a personal courage requires soldiers to do what they are afraid to, to put their comforts, possessions and even friendships risk in the defense of the nation.

These seven army values of duty, respect, loyalty, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage are the core of the U.S modern military culture. The general idea of the main army values can be also expanded with the U.S. Army’s mission statement: “to fight and win our Nation’s wars by providing prompt, sustained land dominance across the full range of military operations and spectrum of conflict in support of combatant commanders.” (The United States Army, 2016) Knowing the main army values is the obligatory first step for every soldier who joins the army; following these values is the lifestyle of military men who stands for its country and nation.

The Army’s Values demand a particular degree of commitment and self-sacrifice from each and every officer and soldier (The United States Military Academy, 2016). Any person who decides to join the military, are required to commit themselves to achieving and maintaining main army values of the corresponding country.
